The 10 day awareness course for parents of special children conducted by Insight  in Trivandrum concluded on the 20th of May. The programme which started on the 29th of April, was being led by eminent physician and researcher on this topic Dr. C P Aboobecker. Considering the demand from the parents, classes were held during weekends.

A 5 day training programme was held at Mahdin Special School for the Visually Challenged at Malappuram from April 23^rd. 10 Visually Challenged students from different parts of the district attended the training programme.

The second summer camp for children with Autism and other special needs was held at the Murinjapalam centre of Insight from 16^th to 21^st of April. The camp included activities like yoga, games, craft work, puppet show and puppet making, 30 students participated in the camp.

A two week course on audio editing for the Visually Challenged, the first of its kind in the country was held at Insight from the 15th to the 25th of March. This programme was attended by 15 students. Classes were led by Insight staff, along with Mr. Juan Carlos from Italy, who is regarded as an expert in this field.

Insight was invited to setup a stall and to showcase its activities in the SOEX12 exhibition at Malappuram. The exhibition was held from the 6^th to the 10^th of January 2012.

Insight organized a five-day workshop on the basics of computer for 13 physically challenged individuals at Uzhamalakkal. The workshop that was held at Uzhamalakkal grama panchayat began on 26 September 2011. Uzhamalakkal is a remote village in Thiruvananthapuram district and has few facilities to access computers. Insight’s attempt to acquaint the differently abled in the village with computers was well received as evidenced by the hospitality the villagers offered to the Insight team. The workshop concluded on 30 September 2011 with a humble closing ceremony chaired by the grama panchayat president Smt. Lathika Kumari.

The classes for the 11th batch of students of the training programme for the visually challenged was wrapped with the IGNOU examination on 2 September. The exam procedures were supervised by Prof. T. U. K. Menon, programme-in-charge officer, IGNOU. The training that started on 25 July had 20 visually challenged participants.

Sri. P K Kunhalikutty, Minister for Industries and IT, inaugurated a one-day seminar on ‘Possibilities of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) for the Differently Abled’ at the Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB) headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram on 28 July. The seminar was jointly organized by KFB and Insight.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that the government will take necessary measures to implement the policy of 3% job reservations for the differently abled in public sector in the state. He assured that the government will support the activities of Insight. Sri. Kunhalikkutty launched ‘Swaram’, a Malayalam Text To Speech software for the visually challenged, developed by Insight. Sri. K Muraleedharan MLA who delivered the presidential address said that a nation flourishes only when its marginalized citizens are brought to the mainstream of the society. He promised that the district administration will soon make provisions to construct a hostel for the visually challenged in the city.

The main feature of the event was a lecture on ‘Role of Assistive Technology in Integrating Individuals with Disabilities in Society’ by Dr. Samuel N Mathew, Director, National Institute of Speech and Hearing. He cited the examples of many persons who have exploited technology and customised it to lead an independent and productive life. This was followed by a presentation on Swaram, an assistive free software that will convert Malayalam digital text to speech. Sri. Rijoy V, developer of the software, detailed the benefits and working of Swaram, that is expected to benefit the visually challenged in the state to access Malayalam documents and web contents.

Sri. Jagan C of ThirdEye delivered a talk on ‘Mobile Technologies for the Visually Challenged’. Three visually challenged persons, Smt. Lissy Verghese, Sri. Krishnan S and Sri. Habeeb C communicated with the audience on ‘Using ICT to bridge the gaps: Success Stories’. They shared their tales of attempts and success in using technology to beat the odds. The day ended with a talk on ‘DAISY’, a digital talking book, by Smt. Sarala Ramkamal from DAISY Forum India.

More than 100 visually challenged persons from across Kerala took part in the seminar. Certficates were distributed to the students who successfully completed their training at Insight. Mary Pushpam, ward councillor, Kunnukuzhi, C K Aboobecker, president, KFB, Sasidharan Pillai, general secretary, KFB and Sajeevan C, secretary, KFB Thiruvananthapuram were also present.
